Church Planting Project

Rui and Joana Ribeiro of LumiarChurch Planting in Lumiar (Lisbon, Portugal)

Rui and Joana Leão Ribeiro are Church Planters in Lumiar, Lisboa, Portugal. Lumiar is the largest area of Lisbon without an Evangelical church. They were invited to join this new church planting project in 2016 as the national partners/leaders and have become the driving force of this much needed and strategic ministry.

Seminary and “On The Job” Preparation

Rui finished his Bachelor’s in Theology in 2016 through the Seminario Teologico Baptista (Baptist Theological Seminary) in Lisbon, and is finishing his Masters through the same institution in a partnership with Southwestern Theological Seminary. His thesis will be on “Short Term Mission Trips.” Since 2013. Rui has worked on staff at the Queluz Baptist Church as Youth Pastor. Queluz is one of the largest Baptist churches in Portugal and has provide invaluable and practical pastoral training.

Nursing and Medical School

Joana finished her studies in Nursing School, and after a few years practicing, decided to further her education in Medical School. She is now in her 6th and final year. She has worked part-time as a Nurse until this year, and has continued to lead ministries in the new church plant, primarily with women and children.

Extreme Need for the Gospel

Portugal is 1-2% reached with the Gospel (very generous estimations). The 80% Roman Catholic majority is decreasing in every census, and people are open to talk about what they believe, especially young people. This is a critical time for the local churches to invest in Excelence, Evangelism, and Discipleship, and that’s what we are trying to implement in the DNA of this church plant, and God willing… in the church plants to follow!
